This Surah is a reminder of Allah’s absolute power over His creation and His ability to protect what He wills. The Quraysh were eyewitnesses to this event, which showed that the Ka’bah’s safety was due to Allah’s will, not human strength.

The Surah begins by asking the listener if they have not seen what Allah did to the People of the Elephant — a rhetorical question meant to refresh a living memory. Abraha’s careful planning and overwhelming force were rendered useless. Allah turned their plot into failure (تَضْلِيل), meaning complete misguidance and ruin.

The birds (ṭayran abābīl) mentioned were not ordinary; their sudden appearance in flocks and their deadly precision in striking the soldiers were part of a divine command. Did He not make their plan go astray?

وَأَرْسَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ طَيْرًا أَبَابِيلَ
And He sent upon them birds in flocks,

تَرْمِيهِمْ بِحِجَارَةٍ مِّن سِجِّيلٍ
Striking them with stones of baked clay,

فَجَعَلَهُمْ كَعَصْفٍ مَّأْكُولٍ
