Makkan Surah | 5 Verses | A Powerful Lesson on Allahโs Protection
Meta Description:
Surah Al-Fฤซl tells the story of how Allah protected the Ka’bah from destruction by Abrahaโs army in the Year of the Elephant, teaching us the ultimate lesson in divine protection and the downfall of arrogance.
๐ Introduction
Surah Al-Fฤซl (ุณูููุฑูุฉู ุงููููู) narrates a miraculous event when Allah protected the Ka’bah from an invading army that came with elephants to destroy it.
This chapter teaches us that no matter how powerful the enemy appears, Allahโs help is greater and unstoppable.
It is closely connected to Surah Quraysh, as the safety given here paved the way for the Qurayshโs peace and prosperity mentioned in the next chapter.
๐ Historical Background (Short Version)
In the year the Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ was born โ known as สฟฤm al-Fฤซl (The Year of the Elephant) โ Abraha, the Christian ruler of Yemen, marched toward Makkah with a mighty army, including elephants, intending to destroy the Ka’bah.
But when they reached near, Allah sent flocks of birds (แนญayran abฤbฤซl) carrying stones of baked clay (sijjฤซl). These stones struck the army, destroying them completely, and the Ka’bah remained untouched โ a clear sign of Allahโs protection.

๐ Tafsir โ Detailed Explanation
This Surah is a reminder of Allahโs absolute power over His creation and His ability to protect what He wills. The Quraysh were eyewitnesses to this event, which showed that the Ka’bahโs safety was due to Allahโs will, not human strength.
The Surah begins by asking the listener if they have not seen what Allah did to the People of the Elephant โ a rhetorical question meant to refresh a living memory. Abrahaโs careful planning and overwhelming force were rendered useless. Allah turned their plot into failure (ุชูุถููููู), meaning complete misguidance and ruin.
The birds (แนญayran abฤbฤซl) mentioned were not ordinary; their sudden appearance in flocks and their deadly precision in striking the soldiers were part of a divine command. The stones they carried, though small, caused fatal wounds โ a sign that it was not the size of the weapon but the will of Allah that brought about the destruction.
The final verse likens the armyโs remains to โeaten strawโ (ุนูุตููู ู ููุฃูููููู) โ a vivid image of total disintegration, like dry husks left after animals have chewed and discarded them. This imagery serves as a permanent warning to anyone who challenges the sanctity of Allahโs symbols.
